GBD Remarks:
Until recently, H. caspius has ben assumed to be a geographic subspecies of a wide-spread Eastern European polylypic species, Coluber (Hierophis) jugularis. It is not clear how strong is its geographic isolation from the closely related H. schmidti from the Southern Caucasus and the Near East.
