GBD Remarks:

Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) is one of the most diferce order of insets and, hence, animals. Butterflies are duirnal Lepidoptera from the families Papilionidae, Pieridae, Nymphalidae, Lycaenidae, Riodinidae, and hesperidae. Altogether there are ca. 17,000 species of this group described, much less than other, mostly nocturnal families of Lepidoptera ("moths"). Georgia has 31 species of Hesperidae, 80 Lycaenidae, 94 Nymphalidae (including 46 Nymphalinae and 48 Satyrinae), 29 Pieridae, and 8 Papilionidae, i.e. ca. 1.5% of the worldwide butterfly diversity. This gives a good option for use of butterflies as indicators of the condition in natural terrestrial habitats.
