GBD Remarks:

A species or semispecies of a wede-spread western Palaearctic superspecies T. cristatus. According to Zajc & Arntzen (1999) separated from T. vittatus over 10 MYBP. T. karelinii has a eastern Mediterranean distribution and forms contact zones with closely related T. carnifex, and T. dobrogicus in Balkans.
