Only species of "brown frog" group (Rana s. str.) in the Caucasus and the Near East. Equally distant from all branches of brown frogs found in Northern Eurasia. Morphologically and genetically variable. In Georgia, two forms (subspecies) found: R. m. camerani in mountains of southern Georgia and R. m. macrocnemis in the rest of the country. The first has shorter legs, sharper snout and commonly light mid-dorsal stripe. Interbreeding takes place in the border area. The there are genetic differences (mitochondrial DNA, allele frequencies) between the forms. However, the differences are not too deep and dated from Ice Age.
