GBD Remarks:

Until recently, H. schmidti has ben assumed to be a geographic subspecies of a wide-spread Eastern European polylypic species, Coluber (Hierophis) jugularis. It is not clear how strong is its geographic isolation from the closely related H. caspius from the Northern Caucasus and southern Russia.
